Who are we?
Our volunteers bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the HMCAP. New members are welcome to join our committee. Why not come along to one of our meetings to find out more about the group, we'd love to hear about your environmental passions and action ideas. All meeting dates are displayed on our HMCAP News and Events page. A warm welcome is guaranteed!
I came to Maldon after growing up in Kenya. With plentiful access to big skies and abundant wildlife its no surprise that the environment has played a huge part in my life. All my working life has been connected to nature, the environment or youth and community has continued to play a big part. As the group has grown and projects developed I particularly enjoy our Saturday morning work parties spent at The Wild Space, it's a special site that creates its own magic and more recently our Gaia - Climate Conversations sessions. To have dedicated time to learn and share about the wider impacts of Climate Change globally and locally has been really beneficial.
I have been a member of HMCAP since September 2024, and was very pleased to join such a great group of friendly, knowledgeable, active and positive people. My particular interest is in climate change, and the problems caused by a rapidly heating planet. I wrote an essay on this subject in 1992 whilst at university as a mature student. The issues shown in that work make it clear that the world has known about them for a very long time.
I grew up among fields and forests and visited rain forests but for a while lost that nature connection through work in the City. Later on climate concern and buddhism led me to activism but more recently I’ve been interested in biodiversity regeneration and solutions like Permaculture. I feel self awareness, community and enjoying nature are key to good mental well-being and happiness and all play an important part in addressing the world’s crises.
A life-long birdwatcher, I moved to Maldon with my family over twenty years ago and quickly realised that appreciating the local wildlife was a perfect antidote to my day job in the car industry! I now work part time as a consultant for companies engaged in sustainable technologies.
I recently completed writing and publishing my first book “Wildlife of Maldon” to spread awareness of the nature on our doorstep and am now focused on doing what I can to help protect our special habitats and the biodiversity they support.
I am a young person who is passionate about climate justice and think local community is incredibly important for this. I love working with such varied, knowledgeable and caring people. My passion is in connecting people to help them communicate what they care about and building community around nature. I think community groups like this one are so important for our changing world. I currently lead on the website and eARTh project.
